Newport News Police, School, and City officials are holding a press conference Monday afternoon, January 9, 2023, in reference to the shooting that occurred at Richneck Elementary School on Friday, January 6, 2023.

Chief of Police Steve Drew, Superintendent of Schools Dr. George Parker III, and Mayor Phillip Jones will be speaking and available for questions.

The press conference will be held at 4 p.m. in the auditorium at Newport News Public Schools Administration Building, at 12465 Warwick Blvd.

We are currently working on arrangements to live-stream the press conference. That information will be released as soon as it is available.

In reference to the January 6 shooting at Richneck Elementary School, Chief Steve Drew met with the victim and her family this morning. She has improved and is currently listed in stable condition. Chief Drew asked that you continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

Because of the ongoing nature of the investigation, we will not be releasing any further information at this time.

In reference to the investigation below, the suspect has been identified as a 6-year-old male student at Richneck Elementary School. The student is in custody. The victim has been identified as a teacher. The teacher’s injuries are believed to be life-threatening. The investigation remains ongoing.

Newport News police are on scene of a shooting at Richneck Elementary School. No students were injured in this incident. An adult was taken to a local hospital. The extent of the adult’s injuries is unknown at this time. There is no longer an active shooter. We’re beginning the process to reunite parents with students. More information will be released when it is available.
